After Jon and George...

(Title refers to the LGBTQ websites, AfterElton and AfterEllen which celebrate Elton and Ellen coming out and the significance thereof in the gay community)

Elton John was the first Rock God who came out as bisexual in 1976BTI. Then as gay in 1992BTI (before the internet) it was shocking for female fans, and his popularity dipped for awhile while social mores caught up.

Now in 2020, Elton, as a gay married man and a father of 2, no one cares.

Ellen Degeneres came out in 1997 and lost her career, and her tv sitcom was cancelled in 1998.

However, in 2003 she made a comeback and hosts a daytime talk show named, Ellen.

Shes in a successful marriage with actress Portia De Rossi and has since amassed $300 million.

Clearly no one cares anymore..

In 1982, a Charismatic, Witty, and Charming man named Boy George showed up on the music scene. He had the most gorgeous eyes and face. George is like a powerful rare earth magnet, he electrifies you and pulls you in and you cant get away.

With his band Culture Club, they made some gloriously lush and diverse music, his vocals were so sublime and soulful.

His androgyny SHOCKED people, but his 6 foot frame, scrappiness, intelligence and GINORMOUS wit won even the most burly men over. (which see Donahue)

On his first Letterman appearance, George challenged the audience to take it "outside". When he thought they were laughing at him. And since his father had trained him to box, I think George would win that fight. He was funny and not a pushover, and thats why ppl respected him.

For his 40 yr long fans, hes an addiction none of us can quit.

Lets get some facts.

The band formed this way,

George put out feelers amongst his club friends that he wanted to start a band. Mikey Craig (on the left in pic above) was interested, then a guy named Suede joined (not shown), then George approached a man named Jon Moss who was a model and drummer

His pin up days, isnt he so handsome? Most of the songs were about him.

George and Jon have both said that when they met it was INSTANT SEXUAL ATTRACTION.

George describes Jon as Bossy, and Jon basically took charge of creating Culture Club, firing Suede and hiring blonde Roy Hay and seducing and romancing George.

George and Roy wrote the songs.
Jon did the deals (I think)
Mikey Brought the Reggae and style
George sang and styled the band.

George and Jon, were open in public, they groped each other in open alleys, held hands walking down the street, kissed in public, both of their parents knew. etc.

They were a couple for 7 years.

Mikey and Roy both say that Jon and George were the powerhouse of Culture Club and their relationship spawned all the great songs.

However, in 1982 when they were signed to a record deal, the record company made them hide the relationship and George would go on Tv and declare he was single and was bisexual.

When this pic was published in the Official Culture Club Book "When Cameras Go Crazy"  I stared at it for hours as a Teenager in the early 80s. I have to admit that Id have loved to have seen an actual video. Im a sexual freespirit and I really like seeing men kiss, I didnt dream of marrying George or having sex with him, lol. I just wanted to see him kiss men. 

I was naive though cause I really thought that pic was just the way ppl greeted each other in the UK or Europe or something. Because we were told by George himself that he wasnt dating anyone.

I went on with my life, and Culture Club, broke up, George started doing drugs and gained weight and fell apart. Then Culture Club slid off the charts and Rap showed up.

As a fan I couldnt understand why George was in such pain and turmoil. Culture Club was drugfree and parents accepted him, even grandmas listened to CC. The man that was on David Letterman that first time was not a drug doer, he was well adjusted and had a good head on his shoulders. Georges brilliance, honesty and Hippy Attitude was being snuffed out by drugs.

We fans didnt understand.......

Some people chalked it up to SHOWBIZ and wrote George off.

Why George, WHY?

Why was this happening?

He was too hopped up on Heroin to do Live Aid and I was sad.

Oh George come on pull it together!
No one understood it.

Until VH1 did a documentary....

And fans finally found out the truth. And everything made sense.

Jon and George were a couple since the beginning of the band formation and the kissing pic finally made sense, 

As did the drugs

The erratic behavior

The weight gain

The arrests

and 

The Death of Culture Club.

Then George wrote his autobiography and I read it while I was at home with my newborn.

Jon cheated on George with women all the time and theyd fight about it.

Eventually it took its toll and the perfect storm happened and BOOM.

I wonder what the female fans that slept with Jon feel about the fact that they were destroying George?

So, the band and George exploded...

What has happened

AFTER_JON_AND_GEORGE!?

Its been 40 years since Culture Club appeared in our consciousness!

And its been about 25+ years since VH1's Behind The Music aired.

AND

YES
George made great strides for style and acceptance of men wearing make up and androgyny and ppl accepting themselves and being unique.
We wouldnt have had RuPaul, The Birdcage, Queer Eye FTSG, or any of the myriad of male YTers with make up.
 

But as far as opening doors for OPENLY GAY ROCK COUPLES or Openly Gay movie stars.

VERY LITTLE HAS CHANGED IN MUSIC OR MOVIES!

In fact, I think it has gotten worse.
Yes, we have legal gay marriages
Yes, Rupaul has a show
Yes, men have make up lines.

YES we have Lil Nas X and Miley Cyrus says shes Pansexual and Katy Perry did that Girl Kissing song, but really, those are niche at best.

Pansexual is acceptable cause Miley still likes dick. If Miley was fucking a Drag Queen ppl would crucify her.

And Katy Perry seemed to be only experimenting

And

Lots of people dont think Lil Nas X will ever have another hit, plus he only came out AFTER the song was a huge hit.

In reality, 

Lance Bass finally came out decades after his huge success with NSYNC, and what has he done since? HGTV

Kristen Stewart still says shes bisexual to keep her career

Hollywood and The Record Companies still set up bearding contracts for their gay stars. 

We can look at Shawn and Camilla and KNOW its fake.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood never made it past Relaxing

And no one in One Direction has come out, even after the band ran its course to massive success!

Harry Styles flirts with coming out, but still hasnt done it 100%

And Toothy Tile is still in the closet, decades after Ted Casablanca talked about a closeted acting megastar in that Blind Item.

So NOTHING has changed.

Aside from Boy Georges Charisma and mega talent, I think the reason a very gay Boy George was able to get a foothold in the USA, was due to what Georges old Manager Malcolm McClaren said about him here (1:40 in)

Malcolm McClaren said George was styled to appeal to woman and girls who wanted their Gods to be cuddly and not dangerous... A rag doll or teddy bear!

His gay image was not, as George himself says, "Lock up your sons" gay.

Although I personally wished he was at least more sexual!

America likes their women slutty (but unapproachable) and their gay men to be ragdolls or teddy bears. Or camp like Andy Cohen and Anderson Coopers NYE show. Or professional like Nate Berkus.

But George himself isnt "In Your Face". Hes monogamous and romantic. He has a vulnerability to him. In his autobiography there are no graphic sex descriptions. He still wears loose garbs. We will never see him on stage with young men rubbing on him and simulating oral or anal...Unlike Madonna.

Hes still that sweet boy from Eltham. hes the boy next door you want your gay son to hook up with. And thats why so many fans feel gyped (Im sure if they read this they wont realize they feel that way until I write it and they read it) 

We feel GYPED, not by George and Jon, but by the music industry that kept us from seeing Boy George and Jon Moss in love.

Role modelling for young gay teens, something to aspire to.

 We never got to see:

The tenderness on stage,

Those mesmerizingly gorgeous blue eyes of Georges glancing at Jon over his drum kit.

The liner note secret messages.

The cute playful comments on a talk show couch. 

Kisses.

Love!

All those wonderful shippable moments that heterosexual celeb couples freely portray. But gay ppl are still pressured to hide.

The fans I believe are still obsessed, even if we believe George, that hes over Jon, we still are obsessed! And I think the reason we cant let it go, is because we were ROBBED of the joy of seeing it live. We found out about it when it was over, tarnished and sad.

Culture Club fans post videos on YouTube devoted to Jon and George. They write reams of FanFiction, They have active groups on Facebook devoted to the relationship.

So I dont think they are over it.

Ill bet ppl pray for Jon to go back to George.
